Wrap Up: May 2019 or this was Wyrd and Wonder

First things first, as a housekeeping note: I’ll be trying to include trigger warnings in my reviews from now on. (I read two books at the same time that really knocked me sideways and while I know this is a weirdly self-involved reason to start including trigger warnings, it has given me the incentive to finally take the plunge, something I have thought about doing for a while) If I get anything wrong or forget to include something, please let me know.

Except for this unfortunate being knocked sideways and the resulting abandonment of any book even remotely challenging (and the resulting binge-reading of romance novels which soothed me), I had a pretty damn brilliant reading month. I rated three books five stars! That never happens!

I had so much fun with Wyrd and Wonder – a month-long celebration of the fantastic hosted by imyril @ There’s Always Room for One More, Lisa @ Dear Geek Place and Jorie @ Jorie Loves a Story, even if I didn’t end up posting a whole lot but I am so glad to have participated. Thank you so much for hosting and for the fun and the new people I followed!

Books I read in May:

  1. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite: 4 out of 5 stars (review)
  2. Silver Silence (Psy-Changeling Trinity #1) by Nalini Singh: 3 out of 5 stars
  3. Storm of Locusts (The Sixth World #2) by Rebecca Roanhorse: 5 out of 5 stars (review)
  4. Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs: 3 out of 5 stars
  5. Blood Bound (Mercy Thompson #2) by Patricia Briggs: 3 out of 5 stars
  6. Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson #4) by Patricia Briggs: 2,5 out of 5 stars
  7. Act Like It (London Celebrities #1) by Lucy Parker: 4 out of 5 stars
  8. Pretty Face (London Celebrities #2) by Lucy Parker: 4 out of 5 stars
  9. Making Up (London Celebrities #3) by Lucy Parker: 3,5 out of 5 stars
  10. Disorderly Conduct (The Academy #1) by Tessa Bailey: 3 out of 5 stars
  11. Disturbing His Peace (The Academy #3) by Tessa Bailey: 4 out of 5 stars
  12. Indecent Exposure (The Academy #2) by Tessa Bailey: 4 out of 5 stars
  13. The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon: 5 out of 5 stars (review)
  14. The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker: 5 out of 5 stars

Favourite of the Month:

The Silence of the Girls just worked for me on every level. I am so very glad to love at least one book on the Women’s Prize shortlist because I was getting a tiny bit frustrated with it.

Stats(ish):

I read 14 books with 4882 pages (yes, I finally filled in my reading spreadsheet and can include these stats again). Two were on the Women’s Prize shortlist, six were fantasy of some kind, and six were romance novels.

Currently Reading:

Books I should get to soon:

I am determined to finish the shortlist before Wednesday (when the winner is announced), so once I finish Circe I will immediately start Ordinary People. I also am technically doing a buddy read of The Dragon Republic with Rachel at the moment but I am awful and haven’t started (in my defense, my sister is currently moving and her daughter won’t stop crying if her mother is more than 2 metres away, so I have been doing the unpacking and everything), so I will have to remedy that soon.

(Some of the) blog posts I loved:

As part of Wyrd and Wonder, Lisa wrote a wonderful post on why she loves fantasy.

I cannot stop sharing positive reviews of one of my favourite books of all time, The Pisces; Michael’s review is brilliant, as ever.

Rachel’s Women’s Prize longlist reflections are as always on point.

Kathy wonderfully reviewed Nevernight, her review is incredibly balanced! Also, the title of her blogpost is brilliant.

  1. In a selfish way I’m actually just relieved that I am not the one messing up a buddy read for once, because I am ALWAYS behind. So, I do not mind that you haven’t started! Plus I’m reading like 4 other books as usual, so. I am so looking forward to your review of Silence!

    1. I am glad you’re not annoyed. I am annoyed at myself but I also need to prioritize the last two shortlisted books. I need to have an opinion!
(Plus, my sister really is taking up a lot of my time. Today she called me at 7:30 in the morning with an idea what I could do for her before work. “Sadly” I was still sleeping and didn’t see the call until it was too late)

  2. Thanks for the link! The Silence of the Girls sounds really interesting. I’ve been curious to follow people’s reactions and see how it compares to Circe, which I liked but didn’t love. I get the impression the writing’s more nuanced than Circe’s?

    1. I enjoyed Silence a lot more than I am currently enjoying Circe. I find it a lot more layered – Miller doesn’t seem to trust her readers to come to their own conclusions.

    1. Thank you!
Storm of Locusts was really quite brilliant. But nowI am annoyed at myself for reading it so soon after its publication because now I will have to wait forever until the next book gets published.
